As İzmir Private Çakabey Schools Project Club students, we are attending the Quarry Life contest with our innovative idea for the Bozalan clay quarry. Despite being very rich in clay reserves, this area severely lacks biodiversity. In our club studies, we have decided that both vertical and horizontal plantation will be the most effective method to implement and ensure succession. The naturally layered structure of the region is very suitable for such an application. We will dig deep holes on the horizontal layers. Each will be planted with Maqui tree samplings. The vertical surfaces will be covered with felt which is a landscaping material and will be planted vertically.

Vertical planting is an innovative technique that allows stone walls or dry surfaces to be turned in to green and living areas. In our preparatory field studies, we have discovered that the naturally growing plant type there, are Mediterranean medicinal plants.Lastly, we will stabilize the seeds filled felt on the vertical surface.
Watering will be ensured with natural rain and such ways, supported by a perforated water pipe throughout the system. Thus the felt will be dampened and the medicinal plant roots will germinate, grow first within and then out the felt layers. In addition, the system could also be nutritionally supplemented via the perforated pipe. As a result, through time and hard work, the area will be green, and biodiversity will be regained.

To determine technical details in the field/ Arazide Teknik Ayrıntıların Saptanması

A team of carpenters, gardeners and technical personnel from Çakabey visited the Bozalan Maden Area to conduct preliminary research. Since the goats are still one of our biggest problems, we have estimated the amount of razor wire to be used to prevent this problem and where to put it. For our irrigation scheme we will examine the water resources of the area and select the most suitable place to construct the temporary water reservoir to be used for drip irrigation. Finally, our team chose the...

Our studies on detecting applicable methods for plantation

Two of the most important elements that provide for raw material needs are mining and agriculture. Today, the essential reason why we have environmental problems is that the ecological balance of the world is being deprived, mostly by the human kind. All industrial activites, such as mining, take part in this deprivation and have temporary or permanent effects on the environment. The recuperation of a damaged area and for it to find ecological balance again can take ages. For these areas to be...

THE GOATS

This week, we would like to mention one of the most important factors that get in the way of a successful plantation in the quarry. The past works have tried different methods of plantation, however, they sadly weren't successful. The reason for that is the goats in the area. When we observe the results of the previous projects, we saw that the goats destroyed seedlings that were planted before they could find the chance to grow and reproduce. With our goal of the project being a successful...
